POLYETHYLENE AND HEAT-SHRINKABLE FILMS

Polyolefin (POF), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) are the three most used types of packaging film, each with its unique properties and applications. Here is the difference between them:

1. Polyolefin Film (POF)

  • Composition: Produced from a combination of polyethylene and polypropylene, which are safe for human health and often used in the packaging industry.
  • Properties:
    • Transparency and gloss: It has excellent transparency and high gloss
    • Flexibility and strength: Very strong and resistant to tearing even at low temperatures
    • Food safety: Safe for food packaging as it does not emit toxic substances
  • Application: Widely used for packaging food, cosmetics, toys, and various retail goods. Can be used with high-speed heat shrink machines.

2. Polyvinyl Chloride Film (PVC)

  • Composition: Produced from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
  • Properties:
    • Translucency and gloss: It has good translucency but is not as lustrous as POF
    • Flexibility and strength: Harder and less flexible than POF, becomes brittle at low temperatures
    • Toxicity and food safety: Releases harmful chemicals when heated, not recommended for direct food packaging
  • Application: Used for packaging non-food products. It is recommended to be used in ventilated rooms, as harmful substances are released during heating. Because of this and the environmental damage it causes, PVC films are prohibited for use in many countries. Green companies do not use PVC film.

3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

  • Composition: Made from low-density polyethylene, known for its elasticity and resistance.
  • Properties:
    • Transparency and gloss: Less transparent with a matte finish, making it unsuitable for products that require an aesthetic appearance
    • Strength and resistance: Very strong and resistant to tearing and puncture
    • Food safety: Suitable for food products, resistant to chemicals and moisture
  • Application: Mainly used for industrial packaging, palletizing, and coverings where strength is more important than aesthetics.

Summary of Differences:

Properties POF PVC LDPE
Transparency High, glamorous Average Low
Flexibility High Average Very high
Strength Strong and tear-resistant Durable but not elastic Very strong and durable
Thickness 9-25mm 15-30mm 30-200mm
Suitable for food Yes No Yes
Application Packaging of goods Non-food items Industrial applications and palletizing

Depending on the specific needs of the packaging and the specifics of the product – whether visibility, strength, elasticity, or food safety is needed, you can choose the appropriate type of film.
